Principally wartime correspondence to his wife, Agnes Reid Ross. The correspondence relates to action at the West Virginia front (Cheat Mt. campaign), 1861-2; Jackson's Valley campaign, 1862; Gettysburg, 1863; and the siege of Richmond, 1864-5. Includes one letter from Samuel McDowell Reid to Agnes Ross and one letter from Ross to his mother. Also includes photographs and a scrapbook of newspaper clippings and Ross family memorabilia.

Robert Edward Lee (1807-1870) served as General of the Confederate Army in the U.S. Civil War and was president of Washington College in Lexington, Virginia from 1865 to 1870. Lee spent the first twenty-three years of his military career in the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers.
